Albany Art Group (Inc.) is a not-for-profit organisation, founded in 1962. Respected West Australian water-colourist Geoff W. Ridley, then a popular local art teacher, was the inspiration for the formation of the Albany Art Group (AAG).
The AAG was initially established by eighteen of G.W. Ridleys senior art students, in order to provide support and encouragement to aspiring artists from the Albany, Denmark and Mt.Barker areas. That aim remains the same to this day. Albany Art Group is currently a strong, growing, diverse group of over 130 visual artists, ranging in age from high school students to octogenarians. We are based at the Vancouver Arts Centre (VAC) in Albany (pictured left). Members meet regularly to discuss AAG business and activities, and also help our volunteer AAG Committee to run the group, and to organise regular local Workshops and Exhibitions. 2023-4 Committee Members: Chair - Abigail Parker Vice-Chair - Suzanne Randall Treasurer - Helen Heerey Secretary - Stephanie Dimmock Exhibitions - Ron Baker Margaret Dowdell Marjan Bakhtiarikish Monday mornings we hold Life Drawing, Monday afternoons Botanical Art and Social Painting, Tuesdays are 'en plain air', Wednesdays is our Pastels group, Friday are Printmaking and various Workshops, and Sundays is our Portrait group. We also organise a variety of other workshops and classes on weekends and throughout the year. AAG organises two or more exhibitions a year to display and sell members work; this includes taking part in the annual Southern Art & Craft Trail. Although we are not primarily a teaching group, our regular Groups and Workshops cover many areas of tuition, and topics can usually be arranged on request - while more experienced members are always on hand during group sessions, to offer help and advice as needed.
